Exploring the Whitsundays: A Comprehensive Guide

The Whitsunday Islands, a gem off the east coast of Australia, beckon travelers from around the world. Multi-day sailing cruises are the quintessential way to soak in the beauty of this magnificent destination.

My Sailing Adventure

I started my journey on a cloudy Sunday, boarding an old yet charming boat. The first day of snorkeling was a bit of a letdown due to the uncooperative weather. But the second day was a different story altogether. A swim at the renowned Whitehaven Beach was a dream come true, followed by an exciting session of snorkeling and diving in a secluded bay. It’s worth noting that during the wet season, expect clouds and the occasional thunderstorm during your trip.

Sailing Logistics and Companies

When planning your sailing escapade in the Whitsundays, you have several options. You can book directly with big companies or seek out deals at tourist offices or hostels. Most of your basic needs are covered on the sailboats, except for snacks and alcohol. Some top-notch sailing companies to consider include OzSail, Redcat Adventures (Tongarra), and True Blue Sailing. The cost for a two-night trip usually ranges from 379 – 499 AUD per person. Airlie Beach is the main hub for departures. It’s accessible by a 7-hour drive from Cairns or a 12-hour drive from Brisbane. Short flights to Hamilton Island or the Whitsunday Coast are also convenient options.

Alternative Ways to Experience the Islands

Staying on the islands is a possibility, but be prepared for steep accommodation prices starting from 200 AUD per night on Hamilton Island. Airbnb offers a more budget-friendly alternative. Camping is a great option as well, with permits priced at 7 AUD per night. Just remember that you’ll need a water taxi service to reach the island or campsite, which will cost at least 80 AUD for a round trip. In Airlie Beach, hostel dorms range from 30 – 60 AUD per night, and some hostels even allow camping for 15 AUD per night.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the Whitsundays are an absolute must-visit. Whether you’re setting sail on the open waters or camping under the stars, this destination has a unique charm that will etch itself into your memory. Don’t miss out on this slice of paradise!
